targeted & individualized plan

DYSPRAXIA TREATMENT

Dyspraxia treatment normally consists of 8 weekly or fortnightly sessions. Each treatment session takes approximately one hour and parents are asked to stay during the session and join in with some of the activities. It is advised that the child wears a T-shirt, shorts and gym shoes for each session.

These treatment sessions are supplemented by a daily home programme of exercises, games and activities (generally taking no longer than 20 minutes each day).

Treatment consists of specific exercises and activities to improve the underlying causes of a child’s challenges (which would have been highlighted in the Dyspraxia Assessment). Therapeutic exercises, games and activities can be targeted at improving:

  • gross motor skills & fine motor skills
  • co-ordination
  • primitive reflex integration
  • spatial and directional awareness
  • bilateral integration & midline crossing
  • eye-hand/foot coordination & ball skills
  • handwriting skills
  • motor planning & sequencing
  • visual & verbal recall
  • organisational skills

treatment methods

I use a combination of the following treatment methods and physiotherapeutic techniques to treat children with Dyspraxia / Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD):

The Lee Method

The proximal muscles are strengthened to provide the child with a ‘point of fixation’ from which to develop their motor skills.

Bal-A-Vis-X

A series of 300+ carefully modulated BALance, Auditory, VISion, eXercises of varied complexity which are steadily rhythmic.

Primitive Reflex Integration

Any existing partially retained primitive reflexes are actively inhibited by exercising the postural reflexes.

Dynamic Movement Skills™

Children master the fundamental movement skills which are the “building blocks” to more complex skills and sporting activities.

Therapeutic Listening

A specific sound-based intervention that triggers the self-organizing capacities of the nervous system.

Handwriting Therapy

Therapeutic interventions to develop and integrate the component skills required for the complex task of handwriting.
